Case Study
Microsoft Data Centers Program
Planning and scheduling three hyperscale Azure data centers (MEL04, MEL05, MEL11) as part of Microsoft's $5 billion Australian cloud expansion.
Project Overview
Between 2022 and 2024, Microsoft invested in a major expansion of its cloud infrastructure in Australia—a ~$5 billion program to build new hyperscale data centers across Melbourne, Sydney, and Canberra.
In Melbourne, Microsoft awarded Kapitol Group the contracts to construct three state-of-the-art data centers: MEL04, MEL05, and MEL11. MEL04 in Yarraville—Microsoft's first data center in Australia—broke ground in December 2022 and was completed by May 2024.
Key Metrics
- Investment: ~$5 billion (Australia-wide)
- Facilities: 3 Melbourne data centers
- MEL04 Timeline: Dec 2022 - May 2024
- Delivery: All three completed by mid-2024
My Role
As Senior Project Planner at Kapitol Group, I led the planning and scheduling for all three Microsoft data center builds in Melbourne:
- Developing integrated master schedules across MEL04, MEL05, and MEL11
- Ensuring efficient sharing of critical resources across projects
- Managing challenges and changes proactively
- Implementing stage-wise commissioning plans for accelerated handover
Challenges & Solutions
When global supply chain delays threatened the delivery of electrical switchgear, I negotiated with vendors and adjusted the sequence of installation activities—bringing non-critical works forward to keep crews productive while awaiting equipment.
I also implemented stage-wise commissioning plans so that sections of the facilities could be tested and turned over in phases, accelerating overall handover. By fostering a collaborative planning environment and focusing on win-win solutions, I helped Kapitol deliver these mission-critical facilities on time.
The success of MEL04/05/11 positioned Kapitol as a preferred builder for future high-tech projects.
